Voters in Bellflower have dumped longtime councilman Ray Smith in a historic election that has seen the election of the first Filipino-American to serve on its city council.

Newcomer Sonny Santa Ines stunned the political world here in Bellflower as he walked away with Tuesday's election for three city council seats in this Southeast Los Angeles County bedroom community.

Santa Ines becomes the first Filipino American and also the first "minority" to never be elected to office in the city of Bellflower. Incredible, isn't it. What has taken voters so long in Bellflower to start "cracking" the old boys club, that has ruled this city for far too long.

Smith has been a fixture at Bellflower City Hall since 1966. He has been in and out of office over and over again, and this time, voters said we want "some type" of change on their city council.

Incumbents Ray Dunton and Randy Bomgaars also earned reelection. Challenger Rick Royse (my pal) finished in the runner up slot.
